One sport in particular has seen a boost in participation among Americans in recent years, and you may be surprised to learn which sport that is. Pickleball has had a huge spike in popularity over the past several years with participation increasing 171% since 2018. Pickleball is a racket sport that is similar in nature to tennis but with some elements of ping-pong mixed in. It is a relatively easy sport to pick up and is a fun activity for adults and kids alike. With its skyrocketing participation rates, many cities across the country have begun to embrace the pickleball craze by building courts and forming clubs dedicated to the rising sport. What other sports have grown in popularity across America? Check out the chart below from ReCreateYou.com that ranks the 25 fastest growing sports in the U.S. based on their increase in participation between 2018 and 2022.
The ranking is based on the participation rates of Americans ages 6 and older across a variety of sports that were included on the annual SFIA Topline Participation report. The only other sport on the list to have increased more than 100% in popularity is alpine touring, which is a style of back country skiing. Winter sports seem to be leading the way in popularity with winter fat biking and snowboard touring at the top of the rankings as well. Winter fat biking is, as the name describes, riding a bicycle through the snow on fat tires. How fun! Which of these sports taking America by storm will you try next?
