Which Auto Manufacturers Have Had The Most Safety Recalls?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collects data every year over the number of safety recalls issued by every car manufacturer. Of the manufacturers with the highest number of recalls since 2010, Ford Motor Company tops the list with 545 recalls. Though Ford is third largest automaker in the U.S., its recall count is disproportionately greater compared to automakers like General Motors and Toyota. Ford’s issues in their vehicles often stem from their airbags, electrical systems, fuel systems, and other components not specified. As a result, they have ranked first consecutively since 2021.

Forest River ranks second for total number of recalls since 2010 with 527 recalls. From 2015 to 2020, they were first for total number of recalls until Ford’s count surpassed them in 2021. Since Forest River specializes in large recreational vehicles and trailers, there is a higher chance for errors in their large RVs over smaller traditional cars. In the case of Forest River, most of their recalls are due to problems with the equipment of their vehicles.

Chrysler joined Stellantis in 2021 alongside other popular car brands like Dodge, Jeep, Fiat, and more. The car manufacturer has issued 514 recalls since 2010, putting it squarely in third place. Most complications in Chrysler’s vehicles happen with the airbags, electrical systems, and powertrains. As one of the largest automakers in the country, these results are not unexpected. As a general rule, the more vehicles a manufacturer makes and sells, the more recalls they will have to issue in time.
