When many of us are sweetly slumbering, there are a few that are venturing into work to help the world keep going around like a well-oiled machine. According to a fascinating analysis by NapLab using the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, around 200,000 people in the United States make their living between the hours of 4 P.M. and 4:59 A.M. They pinpointed where these workers are located to “shed light” on how America operates after hours. Check it out:
It may come as no surprise that the city with the most night shift workers is Las Vegas, Nevada! 16.53% of Las Vegas’ workforce are night shift workers. Gambling never rests in “Sin City” – you can find people manning the slot machines at all hours day and night. Adult entertainment is abundant, the drinks never stop flowing, and the hotels are constantly teeming with excited guests. Of course, the nature of Vegas means rambunctious behavior, so the hospitals must be well-staffed through the long nights too. Some studies show that there are health risks for night shift workers so we owe them a great deal of gratitude. Thank goodness for night workers indeed!
I absolutely love the look of the graphic – the split bar graph easily shows intriguing trends on the split between workers that start between 4 P.M. and 11:59 P.M, and between 12 A.M. and 4:59 A.M. Most cities have more workers in the first night shift, but Riverside, California favors the second shift. I would love any insights into why this might be!
