After the Covid-19 pandemic, workers had to rapidly adapt to stay-at-home orders and discovered that there were benefits to doing their work at home. Many people are more comfortable at home and say they save both time and money. In 2024, one in five Americans are expected to work from home, so clearly this trend is here to stay. With work from home comes the freedom live where you like, so the team at Ooma decided to determine which states are the best to work from home in.
The team looked at factors like average rent, cost of utilities, Internet speeds, and salary-to-rent ratios. These factors were used to created a work from home index that the team used to score each state. The results are mapped out so we can tell which states are friendliest to work from home situations.
Here are the ten states with the highest work from home scores:
- North Dakota
- South Dakota
- Oklahoma
- Vermont
- Kentucky
- Missouri
- Delaware
- South Carolina
- Oregon
- Idaho
States with low scores generally were more expensive to live in with lower average salaries. These are the ten states that scored the lowest:
- California
- Hawaii
- Florida
- Connecticut
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- Utah
- New York
- Maryland
- Alaska
There are a few other things to consider when choosing the best place to live and work from home. Some states have a double tax policy that will require workers to pay taxes to the state they live in as well as the state where their employer is located.
