Pharmaceutical Companies That Have Made the Most Money During the Pandemic

Did you know that the COVID-19 vaccine was the fastest vaccine ever created? In an awe-inspiring achievement of medical science, the new SARS-CoV-2 pathogen was identified, an immune response against it was discovered, and a safe and effective vaccine was developed in less than 12 months. The previous record was held by the mumps vaccine, which took around four years to develop in the 1960s! The company responsible for creating the vaccine, Pfizer (along with BioNTech), went on to become the most profitable pharmaceutical company by revenue in 2021! The team at Insurist has created this beautifully designed, fascinating infographic that visualizes how much the biggest pharmaceutical companies made every second in 2021:

Pfizer made an impressive $2,578 per second in 2021! In fact, Pfizer practically doubled its revenue between 2020 and 2021, going from $41.91 billion to $81.288 billion! Pfizer’s hefty increase in revenue is attributed to creating the mRNA vaccine for the coronavirus, which holds around 70% of the U.S. and European markets. They also developed Paxlovid, which is the go-to pill for treating COVID symptoms. I had actually never heard of China-based Sinopharm, the second most profitable pharmaceutical company in the world. They also developed a vaccine against COVID-19 – it was the first vaccine developed by a non-Western company to earn emergency approval from the World Health Organization. What about Abbvie, the third most profitable pharmaceutical company? They are best known for manufacturing Humira, which is used to treat auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease. All in all, I appreciate both the aesthetic and the knowledge offered by this compelling chart!
