Mapping the Loudest and Quietest Sleep Locations in America

Many people don’t get enough quality sleep, impacting their physical and mental health. A person might have trouble getting to and staying asleep for many reasons, from stress levels to screen time. The team at NapLab focused on a crucial aspect with their new study. They determined the noisiest and quietest places to sleep in the country and labeled them on a map.

The Loudest (and Quietest) Places to Sleep in America

The team used data from the National Transportation Noise Exposure Map to determine these locations. They considered a conversational decibel level of 6 to 70 as a baseline for noise-disrupting sleep. Based on the team’s study, these cities were the loudest:

  • Denver Country, CO
  • El Paso County, CO
  • Arapahoe County, CO
  • Adams County, CO
  • Suffolk County, MA
  • Jefferson County, CO
  • NY County, NY
  • San Francisco County, CA
  • Cook County, IL
  • Bronx County, NY

As for the quietest locations, these ten counties topped the list:

  • Pasco County, FL
  • Lee County, FL
  • Ocean County, NJ
  • Lancaster County, PA
  • Chester County, PA
  • Polk County, FL
  • Gwinnett County, GA
  • Fort Bend County, TX
  • Pinellas County, FL
  • Oklahoma County, OK

Colorado had many of the noisiest locations because of a growing population. City centers like Denver are expanding, and the busy Denver International Airport creates a lot of noise from air and ground traffic. As for quieter locations, many are located in Florida, where retirees flock to communities with strict noise ordinance laws.
