Map Reveals the Cities with the Biggest and Smallest Remote Work Forces

The coronavirus pandemic set a new precedent for how we work with hordes of people shifting to work at home. As millions of workers and companies made this shift, many found that working from home was the best way to work and do business and even after lockdown measures lifted, they remained remote. A new map from the Qualtrics team shows us where these remote workers are living (and not living). Remote work gives people the freedom to move and live wherever they want so there are some fascinating inferences to make from this map.

Which U.S. Cities Have the Largest (and Smallest) Remote Workforce?

The city with the most remote workers is Cary, North Carolina. An amazing 41.4% of the workforce there works from home. Cary is a great example of why some of these cities are attracting more workers. It has high ratings for public schools, housing, crime and safety, and diversity.

People choose to work from home because they feel happier, more relaxed, and better balanced at home. Remote workers report greater satisfaction with their jobs and better work-life balance. Contrary to many fears, remote workers tend to be more productive than people who work on site. Remote workers have a significantly lower carbon footprint thanks to no commute and a remote workforce gives businesses a much wider hiring pool to choose from. With so many benefits it’s no wonder remote work is popular and no wonder that remote workers gravitate toward desirable locations to live and work.
