Infographic Highlights the Details of the World’s Longest Sniper Shots

Snipers are marksmen of incredible ability, able to make covert, long-range, high-precision shots. When these snipers are on the battlefield, these shots are often made under high pressure and extreme conditions. A new infographic from the team at Sightmark shows us the world’s most impressive, longest-distance sniper shots.

The 20 Longest Recorded Sniper Shots of All Time

The graphic reveals that the longest-ever sniper shot was made in 2023 by Viacheslav Kovalsky of the Secret Service of Ukraine during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The 58-year-old businessman turned soldier took out a Russian officer on his second attempt at the shot. He used a Ukrainian rifle called a Horizon’s Lord in English. He used a spotter to help him calculate wind speeds and other conditions affecting his shot.

Sometimes, sniper missions are extremely secretive and made by a unit’s most specialized forces. This includes the second-longest sniper shot made by a Canadian soldier whose name was withheld from public record. He made a 2.2-mile shot during the Iraq War in 2017. An unnamed Australian soldier came in third place with a 1.75-mile shot made in 2012 during the War in Afghanistan.

The graphic is rich with details, including weapons and ammo used to make the shots and context that gives us visual examples that highlight the distance of these incredible shots. For example, the distance of Kovalsky’s shot was longer than the length of the Washington Mall!
