Humans are a social species defined by our sophisticated ability to communicate with each other. Since the dawn of humankind, we have worked on perfecting communication, inventing incredible technology to help us better understand each other and find novel ways to connect with others. Here are a few of the highlights from the timeline that changed the communication landscape:
- The telephone – after human speech and alphabets perfected our ability to communicate our thoughts, the phone gave us the ability to communicate with more people than ever before.
- The mobile phone – the phone was further perfected when we had the ability to speak to anyone, anytime, no longer tethered to landlines.
- The Internet – if the phone was game-changing, the Internet was world-changing. Not only does the Internet allow us to chat with each other quickly and easily via e-mail and social media, but it made human knowledge and learning more accessible than any technology that ever came before.
