Map Shows Us Which American Counties Are the Most Charitable

The Charities Aid Foundation has consistently ranked the U.S. among the top of the World Giving Index. Americans are clearly enthusiastic about giving and charity. A new study from the Harmony and Healing team decided to take these studies a step further and determine which American county residents give the most to charity.

What Are the Most Charitable Counties in the United States?

The team used tax return data from the IRS to compare income with the amount of charitable donations and used the percentage of income donated to pinpoint the most generous counties in the U.S.

Benton County, Arkansas, tops the list by a large margin. They donate an amazing 15.56% of their income, which is about $29.41 on average for each person. The team speculates this is because the Walmart corporate headquarters are located here and inspire a culture of philanthropy. Since Walmart employs nearly half the residents of the county, it seems the culture has influenced the giving nature of people who work and shop with them.

The second on the list is New York County, NY. Manhattan is located here, a city full of people with a lot of money to give and a culture that comes to life during the holidays when giving us on everyone’s mind. Maybe the festive cheer of this city inspires residents to give more!

San Mateo County in California came in third place and it’s far from the only Californian county in the top ten list. It seems Californians are some of the most giving Americans.
