The Superheroes With At Least 10 Million Followers on Social Media
Let’s dive into a little more information about the top six superheroes on social media; all of which boast at least 10 million followers. Some are the creations of Marvel Comics, while others belong to DC Comics.
1. Iron Man
Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, tops the list with 19,729,726 followers on social media. When Marvel comic book legend Stan Lee created him in 1962, Iron Man was a founding member of the Avengers and a character who was very much central to the story. However, over the decades, the character’s popularity dwindled, eventually fading into obscurity. That was at least until 2008, when he made his theatrical debut in Iron Man, marking the character’s mainstream comeback and the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He was portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in ten films over an eleven year period, culminating in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Stan Lee was adept at creating superheroes who could inspire and amaze an audience while still being relatable. Tony Stark was no exception. The character overcame several tragedies in his life, including the assassination of his parents and imprisonment by terrorists. He used his inventive mind to design an iron suit that helped him escape. As one of the leaders of the Avengers throughout the MCU’s films, it’s no surprise to us that he is as popular on social media as he is.
2. Captain America
With 18,070,414 followers on social media, this Marvel superhero is in hot pursuit of Iron Man to claim the top spot. The February 2025 release of the movie Captain America: Brave New World, with a notable cast including Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, renewed excitement about those who wield the shield. Fans love Captain America because of his courage and ferocity in defending what is right, no matter the consequences, and this goes for Sam Wilson just as much as it did for Steve Rogers.
3. Batman
Created for DC in 1939, Batman maintains steady popularity with audiences in the 21st century. As of this writing, the character has 14,767,922 social media followers. Along with being a memorable comic book superhero, Batman has been on television, in video games, and over a dozen movies. Batman is somewhat different from other superheroes, which may explain his enduring appeal. While not a completely unique concept, he is one of the most mysterious and conflicted figures in the world of superheroes, as one of his primary motivations is seeking revenge for the death of his parents. Just like Iron Man, his parents were killed-but unlike Iron Man, he actually witnessed their murder as a young child. This event is what sets Bruce Wayne on course to eventually become Batman.
Another similarity to Tony Stark is Bruce Wayne’s incredible wealth, which enables him to be equipped with the very best crime-fighting technology available. Over the years, the character’s inventive toolbelt and ultra-cool Batmobile have certainly played a part in growing his massive fan base.
As the protector of Gotham City, the character is also known by iconic nicknames such as The Caped Crusader and The Dark Knight. In recent years, Batman has been portrayed by Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson in live action, and Kevin Conroy, Will Arnett, and Keanu Reeves in animated film and TV series.
4. Thor
Thor, the mythical God of Thunder, is number four on the list with 14,718,299 social media followers. This is yet another superhero creation by comic book artist Stan Lee. Thor is known for carrying his legendary hammer, Mjolnir, a weapon that can only be wielded by those who are worthy. He uses his hammer to defeat enemies of all shapes and sizes including giants and monsters. Thor hit the big screen in 2011, with Chris Hemsworth in the titular role. In The Avengers (2012), Thor joined his fellow big-hitting superheroes, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye to protect the world from an alien invasion. From there, Thor has appeared in six more movies to date, with more likely on the way.
5. Hulk
After an accident in the lab, scientist Bruce Banner has been changing into his green alter ego, the Hulk, since 1962. This Marvel character has collected a large fan base, first in the pages of comic books and then in the iconic television series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. While there hasn’t been an Incredible Hulk film since 2008, the Hulk’s popularity in the Avengers franchise has led to him amassing an army of 11,100,673 followers on social media. There are more than a dozen movies with the Hulk character both as the lead and as one of the Avengers. Bruce Banner is another nontraditional superhero on our list, which may be why he is so appealing to fans. Though he is one of the Avengers, his uncontrollable anger and tremendous strength threatened to smash everyone and everything in his path. That is, until he learned to live harmoniously with “the other guy.” A collection of famous actors-including Edward Norton, Eric Bana, and most recently, Mark Ruffalo-have contributed to boosting the popularity of the Hulk by adeptly portraying him on the big screen.
6. Green Arrow
Though perhaps lesser known than the top five superheroes on social media, Green Arrow (or Oliver Queen) has a solid fanbase with 10,280,308 followers. The character’s incredible popularity-that surprisingly allows him to have more followers than iconic superheroes such as Superman and Spider-Man-can be attributed not to movies, but the beloved CW television show Arrow. One of the similarities this character shares with Batman and Iron Man is that he’s a billionaire. But, despite money being no object, this superhero sticks to one weapon, a bow and arrow. He expertly uses it to battle criminals on behalf of the poor and downtrodden, much like a modern-day Robin Hood. His fans enjoy seeing what sort of deadly arrow he will pull next from his quiver. Green Arrow has appeared alongside Batman, another king of the DC Comics family, which has only added to his popularity with fans.
