Nobody knows.
It’s been known for a long time within the Star Wars fandom that there are millions of different kinds of species in the galaxy (roughly 20 million, according to some) but no one knows what species Yoda was.
For some reason, George Lucas kept a fairly strict policy of keeping Yoda’s species a secret for years, once saying, “he’s the illegitimate child of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy,” when directly asked. But he was quite serious about his lore being mysterious, even going so far as to pulp a trading-card game depicting the Yoda species.
The only other members of Yoda’s species include Yaddle, one of the other Jedi masters who briefly appear in the Phantom Menace, Santa Claus, supposedly, who shows up as an Easter egg in the Star Wars: X-Wing computer game, and, lastly, that famous character who’s now a meme invading the Internet.
The Mandalorian’s child star has drawn tons of viewers to the show, and tons of new payers to the flagship streaming service, Disney+. It seems that Disney is now quite literally capitalizing on Lucas’s intense, stingy secrecy kept over decades.
Even today, the character’s species is officially listed as unknown.
Perhaps we’ll finally get a big reveal in the second season of The Mandalorian!
For now, we can content ourselves with studying the hundreds of other Star Wars species. Here are 50 of the top species found in Star Wars canon and the Expanded Universe, brought to us by AAAStateofPlay.com:
