Just like how every Batman adaptation puts its own unique spin on the Caped Crusader, that’s also true for his car. Along with different suits, actors, and overall tone, the Batmobile always seems to reflect what kind of hero we’re dealing with in a particular version. While the core concept of a gadget-loaded, crime-fighting vehicle remains the same, it has evolved drastically over the decades. It’s been a long-standing debate among superhero fans as to which version is the best, so we’ve rounded up all the live-action Batmobiles from TV and movies, and we want to hear your opinion on which one stands out as the ultimate ride.

If you’re not decided just yet, here’s a closer look at the vehicles that have transported the iconic Gotham vigilante:
1. Batman (1943)

The 1943 serial Batmobile is less “a terrifying symbol of nocturnal vengeance” and more like “a nice car Bruce already owned.” It’s essentially just a standard black sedan (specifically, a 1939 Cadillac Series 75 convertible) that Bruce Wayne drives when the top is down, but Batman drives when the top is up. Although it lacks the armor and firepower of its successors, this live-action interpretation actually took inspiration from the first-ever appearance of the masked hero’s car in Detective Comics issue #27 from 1939.
2. Batman and Robin (1949)

The 1949 serial version tweaks the formula slightly, but at this point, we’re still in simple “rich guy’s car” territory. The sequel to the 1943 serial was a bit more grounded; this time, Bruce drove a 1949 Mercury convertible, which felt pretty realistic for a wealthy businessman to be driving to the office, but less impressive for a vigilante superhero. Once again, there were no impressive gadgets or upgrades to this vehicle, apart from a convertible roof.
3. Adam West’s Batmobile (1960s)
1960s Batmobile; 20th Century Fox
Adam West’s Batman was the first live-action adaptation to bring the Dark Knight into mainstream popularity, but we’re not saying it’s just because it features the first Batmobile that actually had some serious tech upgrades. In typical 1960s fashion, this Batmobile is stylish, bold, and creatively designed, lacking any subtlety at all. The base of the vehicle is a Ford Futura concept car with a sleek black-and-red paint job, bat-like fins, bubble canopies, and a few bat-shaped stamps on the body and wheels. For as campy as this version is, the car itself is pretty cool looking.
4. Michael Keaton’s Batmobile (1989–1992)

There wasn’t much by way of Batman in the live-action sphere for a few decades, and then Tim Burton rolled in with a dark, edgy Batman like we’d never seen before. The Urban Gothic aesthetic of this universe translates perfectly to the car Michael Keaton drives. The result is a highly stylized, Art Deco rocket ship on wheels that feels like the perfect whip for a guy who fights crime dressed as a bat. For many fans, this is the definitive silhouette of the Batmobile and strongly influenced the design of future live-action interpretations of the car.
5. Val Kilmer’s Batmobile (1995)

By 1995, the overall shape remained sleek and elongated but started to edge slightly back into camp territory. This Batmobile has literal batwings protruding from it, as well as some edgy neon lights that glow blue as Val Kilmer drives it through Gotham’s underbelly. This version also shares the previous iteration’s fancy jet exhaust, has various weapons, and is featured in one of the most memorable Batmobile sequences in cinema when Robin steals it for a joyride.
6. George Clooney’s Batmobile (1997)

Taking the neon-illuminated concept even further, George Clooney’s time in the driver’s seat gave us an immensely long, open-cockpit cruiser that leaned heavily into extravagant parade-float territory. The front grille prominently featured a glowing Bat emblem, ensuring that everyone in the city knew exactly who was approaching from miles away.
7. Christian Bale’s Batmobile (2005–2012)

When Christopher Nolan took up the Batman live-action mantle, he decided that the Dark Knight would no longer get a sleek, roadster-style vehicle but rather a repurposed military tank. It makes sense for the version of the character he created, with its brutalist design, sharp angles, and bulky profile. The term Batmobile was thrown out, and the vehicle was instead called “the Tumbler,” a fitting name for something that looks like it belongs in Halo.
8. Gotham Batmobile (2018)

When the Fox’s Gotham finally unveils its Batmobile, it ends up being a surprising throwback to the 1940s. This version is a 2018 matte black Ford Mustang GT fastback that Alfred upgrades to be completely bulletproof. For a TV show with a limited budget about a younger, pre-Batman Bruce Wayne, this approach makes sense, even if it isn’t as flashy as we’ve come to expect in recent decades.
9. Titans Batmobile (2018–2019)

Even though it primarily appears in brief glimpses and shadows during the show’s run, the design featured in 2018’s Titans seems to take inspiration from all its predecessors. It has the bubble canopy from the 60s, the general silhouette from 1989, and still somehow manages to pass as “fancy, rich guy’s racecar.” It’s a shame we never actually see it on the road, as we don’t know what kind of weapons it might be packing.
10. Ben Affleck’s Batmobile (2016–2021)

Poor Batfleck got a lot of hate for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, but there’s no denying that this Batmobile had a cool design. While there are some elements from Christopher Nolan’s Tumbler, this version leans back into the roadster energy while still looking like a weapon in its own right. It wasn’t all bark, either, with twin front-mounted machine guns and massive, rugged tires designed to navigate a battle with a godlike alien hero. It’s a good fit for an older, hardened, bitter, and frankly humorless iteration of the Dark Knight.
11. Robert Pattinson’s Batmobile (2022)
2022 Batmobile; Warner Bros. Pictures
The 2022 Batmobile takes a sharp turn stylistically and lands us back in the “rich guy’s muscle car” territory. The frame of the vehicle appears to be a 1969 Dodge Charger, featuring an exposed rear engine that glows red, armor plating, and little in terms of gadgetry. It’s featured in some exciting chase sequences, where it proves itself to be fast, dexterous, and surprisingly fireproof.
As we’ve seen over the past 80 years, there is no single right way to design this iconic superhero’s ride. So, now that you’ve gone through the lineup, which Batmobile reigns supreme?
