A Complete Guide to Marvel Unlimited

Marvel Unlimited is a massive digital library chock-full of decades’ worth of superhero action and tales from a galaxy far, far away. Digital comics are the perfect solution for readers who want to save space and money. Once you create a subscription-based account, you’re confronted with thousands of issues of comics, and it’s natural to feel a little bit overwhelmed, especially if you’re new to reading comics. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about Marvel Unlimited, whether you already have an account or you’re on the fence about investing in one.

Marvel Unlimited Formats

You can access Marvel Unlimited on PC, mobile, and tablet. The design is not consistent across platforms. Marvel Unlimited is not optimized for web use. Links are often broken, and the reading experience just isn’t as smooth. Marvel Unlimited seems to be designed for use on its mobile app. The experience is much better, but of course, everything is much smaller and can strain your eyes. My recommendation is to use Marvel Unlimited on a tablet if you can. The app shines in this experience and the screen is about the same size as a physical comic book. The “Smart View” format works best on a tablet. This is an option that moves around the page, zooming in on key dialogue bubbles and art details with a tap of your finger. This dynamic reading experience is a major benefit of reading digital comics, and it looks the smoothest and most immersive on a tablet.

Navigating Marvel Unlimited

With over 30,000 comics and over 80 years of history, it’s natural to get lost in the Marvel Unlimited chaos. Luckily, the company has created hand-curated reading lists to guide you through your reading experience. They’ve separated reading lists into these categories:

  • Events
  • Characters
  • Series
  • Creators
  • Hidden Gems

For those brand new to Marvel, the creators have even made a “Start Here!” list, though there’s really no way to go wrong. Fans of Marvel movies and TV shows should try the Avengers’ Blockbuster Stories list to see what inspired the big-screen adventures. Star Wars fans aren’t left out! Find a reading list starring Jedi Masters, Sith Lords, bounty hunters, and rebels. Choose whatever list interests you most, and dive in.

Regular Readers and New Releases

If you’re already a regular Marvel reader following new releases, you can keep track of your favorite series on Marvel Unlimited. The app’s homepage has a few places to find new releases, including “Popular This Week” and “See What’s New.” One thing to remember is that new releases don’t hit the app at the same time as physical copies hit the shelves at your local comic shop. There can be up to a 3-month delay before new issues appear in the app. Keep this in mind as you consider whether Marvel Unlimited is worth it.

Tips on Using Marvel Unlimited

There are some specific actions you can take and settings you should use to make the most of your Marvel Unlimited reading experience.

    1. Make sure to enable “Show Marked as Read” in your settings. With such an enormous library, it will quickly become impossible to remember everything you’ve already read. Let the app keep track of that for you.
    2. Use the browse button to filter comics by character, series, creator, events, and publication year. This will help you find what you’re looking for faster.
    3. Don’t lose track of reading lists you’re interested in! You can pin these to your home screen for future reference.
    4. The app makes suggestions just for you, so keep an eye on this box to find hidden gems.
    5. If you have no idea what you want to read and just want some Marvel comics in your brain right now, let Marvel pick for you! Tap the logo to open the Random Book Selector and let the chaos commence.
    6. Make the app easy on your eyes by choosing colors that look best. The app offers white, black, and red color schemes in the settings.
    7. Check Reading Mode in settings and enable “Keep screen awake while reading.” Nothing’s more annoying than the tablet falling asleep while you’re spending some time looking at all the details of a well-designed page.
    8. Plan your reading, then click “Read offline” on the issues you want to access when there’s no Wi-Fi.
    9. Use the “More in…” feature to see every issue in a series.

Why Use Marvel Unlimited?

Marvel Unlimited is a way to have a MASSIVE library of comic books at the tips of your fingers. You could spend your life reading and not get through everything in your database, and it’s infinitely more cost-effective than trying to collect physical copies of all these comics. You’ll save space and money by using Marvel Unlimited, and you’re likely to discover new comics you never would have heard of otherwise.

What Are the Drawbacks to Marvel Unlimited?

Marvel Unlimited lacks the collector appeal of physical comic books. You can’t display your library on a shelf, nor can you trade or sell your old issues. If staying current with the latest issues is important to you, Marvel Unlimited may not be the best choice since you’ll need to wait for new releases to arrive on the app. This can leave you feeling out of the loop when talking with friends at the comic shop and can even expose you to spoilers.
